Robots can distribute medication and operate the elevator. They're already helping to care for the elderly and attend to bed-bound patients, though mainly they just serve as waiters on wheels who follow simple instructions. But these young researchers want to change that. One day, their robot will be intelligent. At the Munich Institute of Robotics, they've developed GAMI, a humanoid robotic assistant for the elderly. GAMI, give me a fist bump. GAMI makes it look easier than it is. Good boy. Kunter, how is your feeling? Hours of training and programming is going into teaching GAMI how to move like a human. One is about the healthcare, for instance, we want to do ultrasound remotely or autonomously. That's why this is one example of the healthcare application. The robot must first learn how to move its hands and arms to imitate simple human movements. Thank you. But the distance from robot to human hand will vary. That's easy for us humans, but GAMI has to learn it first. Now follow your hand. GAMI has to see, move through space and respond to touch. A lot of programming goes into what for humans is just intuition. You show GAMI how to put the water with the hand. You show GAMI how to put the water with all the devices you know. But I am programming GAMI such that GAMI is able to learn these pulling skills. And then in the future GAMI can do it itself. Unlike many robots, GAMI has human-like hands. With plenty of training, eventually GAMI will be able to carry out all sorts of finely calibrated moves, things other robots can't. Nice to see you. You look marvelous today. You too. Social robots like Pepper have already been rolled out in care homes, even though the Japanese model's language comprehension skills and entertainment options are relatively primitive. There's the caregiving robot Reba 2, which helps nursing staff lift patients. And a household robot that sounds the alarm in case of accident. In Munich, the race is on to create the best nursing care robot. GAMI should eventually be able to carry out medical examinations by employing an avatar, a double of the robot's arms. Performing an ultrasound is one of the things GAMI should be able to do one day. For long-term care patients that makes sense, says this test patient, who is also a doctor, project consultant and pensioner. It's a mobility issue. I won't have to move the elderly patient from the nursing home to the hospital or doctor's office. And it saves time. Their research is already bearing fruit. The avatar robot arm is being used at a university hospital in Munich. In 10 years' time, GAMI should be able to go live, as one of the most intelligent, mobile and medically adept medical robots in the world. And in the future, it should be able to go live as one of the most intelligent, mobile and medically adept robots on the market.
