While the rule is not strictly enforced, it shapes the community’s lifestyle, with some embracing the gardening requirement and others finding it challenging. Residents also take responsibility for building and maintaining local infrastructure, such as streets and schools, fostering a sense of independence and cooperation.

The community has developed local initiatives like a consumer collective for trading produce, with an emphasis on organic practices. Although Oosterwold has not met its goal of supplying 10% of Almere's food demand, its grassroots approach to urban agriculture and self-governance is seen as a success by its founders. Despite rising property prices, the experiment continues to attract new residents interested in sustainable living.

The future of living? In Oosterwold, gardening is obligatory

Everyone has to be a gardener in this town. This is Oosterwold in the Netherlands. Residents here must devote half of their land to growing fruit and vegetables. Some feel it's a bother, others say it's a reason to live here. Listen, yeah, with it, how quiet it is, with the birds and everything around you, for me it's relaxing, yeah. The architecture of the homes is dictated by the people who live in them. There are hardly any rules, which is unusual in the Netherlands. Yet in return, everyone has to join in building and maintaining the streets, schools and infrastructure. Oosterwold is an urban planning experiment. So what's it like to live here? I have found a place where a lot of things I think are important in life are combined. Since 2016, Oosterwold has been growing on the outskirts of the Dutch city of Almere. 6,000 people live here today. No one really checks whether they're growing vegetables on half of their land. And because most of them work normal jobs and don't have much time, not everyone sticks to the guidelines. For Mieke Roijs and her husband Bart, the low property prices allowed them to live their dream of having their own garden. There were a couple of reasons. One is build a house which is neutral in energy. That was a reason. A bigger garden where before we lived in an area where I had a small vegetable garden. And the third reason was live in a community. What Mieke doesn't use herself, she gives to the Volko Oosterwold. Bart-Jan Vermoe founded this consumers' collective where the residents can sell and buy locally grown products. But fruit and veg from elsewhere too. Each week an overview of what's available is published online. Everyone selects items for their own basket from what's on offer. We do have an agreement with each other to produce whatever is being sold in a Volko without any use of pesticides and pretty much according to the standards of organic farming. The vegetables get harvested Wednesday morning. They are being brought over and Wednesday afternoon they're already being handed out. So it really can't be any fresher than that. But in Oosterwold it's not just about growing vegetables. It's also about independent coexistence. For example, because residents wanted their own school, a handful of them quickly built a building for it. That was in 2022. And these days too, people who want to live here have to do a lot on their own and clear it with their neighbours. The good side is you can do everything yourself. The downside is you have to do everything yourself. So I'm always saying there's like a natural filter of people who are living in Oosterwold. You have to have some perseverance to go through all these things you have to take care of. It's a lot of work. It's hard work. And then, yeah, you can enjoy it later. Jan-Elko Jansma of Wageningen University is one of the people who came up with the concept of the Oosterwold project. In the meantime, there's professional farming here, but they still haven't hit their self-made target of covering 10% of the demand of nearby Almere. Most of the residents see themselves as amateur farmers, far from the efficiency of industrial farming. But Jansma says Oosterwold is still a success. It's not planned from above. It's really grassroots in that sense. But also urban agriculture. And most people embrace the idea of urban agriculture. Of course they struggle because most people have an urban background. And, yeah, growing food is a profession. Oosterwold isn't a problem-free modern utopia. Nevertheless, it's an inspiring experiment that explores a new way of life. And even though property prices have gone through the roof in recent years, there's still green space waiting for buyers.
