Many communities in this region became inaccessible and uninhabitable for extended periods, with aid workers struggling to reach affected areas.

In contrast, the eastern half, including Kingston, saw tropical storm force winds and less severe damage, such as partial roof and wall failures and shorter power outages. The comparison highlights how the intensity of a hurricane's impact can vary greatly depending on its path and the strength of winds in different locations.

One thing we've been talking about with Hurricane Melissa in relation to Jamaica is the difference in what kind of conditions you had, depending on where you are on the island. Some are like Kingston on the eastern half of the island. You had tropical storm force winds and tropical storm like conditions. However, the western half of the island where Melissa made landfall very much hurricane like conditions and that of a Category 5, which is what Melissa was when it made landfall. So just to give you better context about the imagery you're seeing on the right hand side of your screen from Montego Bay. That is major hurricane around a Category 5 condition. So what does that mean as far as the damage? A high percentage of framed homes will have been destroyed. We're talking about total roof failure and walls collapsing. We're talking about just no power at all. Communities completely cut off because of the damage from trees from power lines, power poles, and those power outages. There's no way to get out of those power outages. They're not going to be resolved in anytime soon. They can last weeks, even months with a situation like this, and also because of the damage because of the lack of power, the lack of clean water, things like that areas become uninhabitable for weeks and months. Many of the areas that aid workers haven't been able to get to yet. With a Category 3 hurricane, it's still a major hurricane. A lot of damage to well built frame homes. Numerous roads are going to be blocked. There's not going to be a lot of electricity and there's not going to be electricity for days or even weeks, but I want to give you that comparison with a tropical storm. There's still damage. However, it's some homes, partial wall and roof failure. Windows can be blown out. Any unsecured objects if they're light or moderate weight, they can become projectiles, and then there are those power outages, but it doesn't take as long. To get them restored.
