Republican lawmakers in Texas have reintroduced a ban on hemp-based products after a similar bill was vetoed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Texas lawmakers are once again debating the regulation of intoxicating hemp products following a recent veto by the governor that prevented a ban from becoming law. The state's hemp industry, which has seen rapid growth since the legalization of hemp in 2019, now supports over 50,000 jobs and has a $10 billion economic impact.

Supporters of stricter regulations argue that many hemp products are unregulated and accessible to children, while opponents note that these products became legal under federal law and that other substances like alcohol and tobacco pose greater risks. The governor's veto has allowed businesses to continue operating, but the issue remains contentious as lawmakers consider additional regulations in a special session.

Supporters of a ban argue hemp products are largely unregulated. They could be high potency sold in gas stations and smoke shops and accessible to children. Other states have also tried to ban them and face legal challenges. I agree with the goal. The purported goal of SB3, which is to protect children from potentially dangerous products. Brian Harrison is a Texas Republican who voted against the ban. We deal with alcohol and we deal with tobacco which kill far more people than these hemp products and these are products quite frankly, people need to not lose sight of this. We're talking about products that became legal as a result of a action that President Trump took in 2018. Keep Governor Greg Abbott vetoed the Texas ban just before it would have become law. The decision put him directly at odds with his Lieutenant Governor and it allowed businesses like Emerald Organics to keep their doors open. They heard us and it was a celebration.
