They've established military camps where they operate via underground tunnels. They target us daily with snipers and drones. We respond with artillery and sniper fire. But we don't trust the SDF and we can't predict when they might break the ceasefire. To overcome distrust, the Ahmad al-Sharia government agreed to resolve issues peacefully in a US-brokered agreement in March. Nets have been placed in front of these soldiers to protect them against the constant threat of drones. This is the last position under the control of the Syrian Ministry of Defence and behind us are areas under the Syrian Democratic Forces. And for these guns to remain silent, both sides will need to abide by the terms of the peace plan. Their orchards are abandoned and homes destroyed. A few kilometres away, the scars of war are evident. Aida lost her nine-year-old son, Basil, who she remembers as the heart of her family. We were preparing breakfast and he was playing with his siblings. When we heard the sound of artillery, he ran to take shelter in the bedroom. A rocket struck the wall and rubble buried me and my five children. We managed to pull ourselves out, but it took me time to recover my son's body. It was indescribably heartbreaking. Unlike other factions in Syria, Kurds in the country's north have refused to serve under a united Syrian army. SDF fighters did not allow access to al-Jazeera, but routinely showcased their military prowess. This is Sheikh Maqsood neighbourhood in Aleppo city. Kurdish armed fighters control it and often clash with Syrian government forces. If UN warnings that Syria could become another Libya are not to come true, the government in Damascus must assert control over all its territory.
