In the aftermath of a destructive Typhoon Halong, historic floodwaters have destroyed remote communities across western Alaska, forcing hundreds of evacuations that could continue for days.

Authorities in Alaska are conducting what is described as the largest evacuation and sheltering operation in the state's recent history, following severe flooding that has left remote villages without power and with limited food supplies. The affected communities are difficult to access, requiring significant logistical efforts to deliver resources and evacuate residents.

Helicopters and military aircraft are being used to transport people from small villages to Bethel, and then onward to Anchorage. National response teams, including those who assisted with previous major disasters, have been deployed to help manage shelters and provide support. Officials estimate that up to 2,000 people may require assistance, and emphasize that the recovery and rebuilding process will be long-term, especially with winter approaching.

This has been a historic event and is the largest evacuation and sheltering in the state of Alaska in recent memory. The villages are really remote, and they are spread across many, many miles. And so it is not easy to get to them, and it is not easy for them to get to us. You can't just drive a car to them, you can't just drive a boat to them. It takes a lot more effort to be able to get resources and supplies to them. These communities are without power, and they are very limited on their food. Some of these communities have less than 72 hours worth of food and one to two days worth of fuel to power the generators. Trying to put teams into those communities is really hard. And as you're responding to those communities, you don't want to displace those people already going through a horrific event. We are helping anybody who needs to get out of the small communities, using our army guard helicopters to bring them to Bethel. And then from Bethel, anybody who is willing to get on a C-17 who wants to be evacuated, we're gonna help them get back to conditions in Anchorage. And it is all hands on deck. Everybody is supporting and trying to help Alaskans in their time of need. We are getting national teams that have responded to the Lahaina fires. Currently the Los Angeles fires, they were there. That same team is actually here in Alaska right now, starting to work those shelters. We've got hundreds of folks that are coming in from across the country to help. We have been hearing that there could be up to 2,000 folks that may need help with sheltering. This is gonna be a long term event. The winter is coming pretty fast. How do we shelter them and be respectful of them and their communities and their culture for the long term till we get to where we can rebuild their homes?

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
