The Justice Department's handling of cases involving Trump critics and ongoing international issues, such as tensions in the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine, also featured in the political backdrop.

On Friday, Trump commuted the sentence of former New York Republican Congressman George Santos, freeing him from prison. Santos had pled guilty to fraud and identity theft.
