Habitat for Humanity is known for building affordable homes from the ground up. Now, they're launching a new partnership where construction for a 16-unit development in Amherstburg will happen mostly inside.

Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with construction company Amoco, is building sixteen modular housing units in Amherstburg, Ontario, using a factory-based approach in Oldcastle. The homes are fully finished before leaving the factory and are designed to be assembled quickly on site, with the goal of increasing affordable housing and construction efficiency across Canada.

The project utilizes Canadian-made materials and aims to expand modular housing solutions provincially and nationally. The Amherstburg development is expected to be completed by mid-next year, with costs comparable to traditional construction but offering improved quality and faster build times. Habitat for Humanity notes a significant need for affordable housing in the Windsor-Essex region, with 9,000 families currently waiting.

There are 16 housing units like these ones that are destined for a Habitat for Humanity project in Amherstburg. The modular units are being built right here on this factory floor in Oldcastle and the hope is that they can increase affordable housing across the country and make its construction more efficient. And when these units leave our factory, they're fully finished with cabinets, sinks, windows, doors, everything. Whether it's a single family, a duplex or a fourplex, these can be constructed to fit any need. The homes are modular, comparable to a known children's toy. For sure it's a bit like Legos. There's a connection system that puts all these pods together. Saving time on the construction site, keeping crews up to the elements and, the company says, ensuring quality. As it goes out, with these steel chassis, they have to be rigid so we don't have drywall cracks or broken windows or water infiltration. Everything QC's out of the shop. They're built indoors and dropped on their foundations. All you do on site is final connections after that. A-Links belongs to Amoco, a major construction company headquartered in the region. They broke ground with Habitat on Monday indoors. And we're going to be partnering together to not only build 16 homes in Amherstburg but to innovate a modular design that can address affordable home ownership across the country. A homegrown project they hope can spread. We use all Canadian-made products, Canadian-made steel. We're ready to take it across the province and across the country and help the government meet its objectives in terms of more housing faster and having that housing be affordable and also high quality. The Amherstburg development is scheduled to be completed by mid-next year. As far as the cost of these houses go, it's on par with regular construction means they use. Where we're gaining the benefit is the quality of the house and the time. So we can build year-round. We can build in an equality-controlled environment. There's less waste and so we think that's a great innovation. Way to scale up at a time when the lack of housing is at crisis levels.
