Celebrations marked the cessation of hostilities, with hopes for national unity, particularly in Raqqa, now under government control.

However, within 24 hours, renewed clashes broke out, including near sensitive prison sites holding ISIL detainees. Both sides accused each other of violating the agreement, raising concerns over the security of these facilities and the fragility of the peace process.

After weeks of fighting and military buildups in the north and northeast, finally a ceasefire in Syria. Celebrations nationwide heralding the cessation of hostilities. In Raqqa, a former stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, now under government control, people said it was a chance to unite a country that has been divided for too long. But within 24 hours of the agreement between the government and the SDF being announced, it was clear an end to the violence would not be so simple. Reports of fighting in parts of the country, both soldiers and Kurdish fighters killed in various confrontations. With so much military hardware and manpower spread across large tracts of Syria, and years of animosity and division, transferring control of territory and resources proved easier to agree on paper than in practice. Prisons, the most sensitive of sites, spread across several cities, holding ISIL fighters and other detainees. The SDF has long warned against losing control of these jails, used to hold dangerous offenders. A question mark remains over their security, as both parties blame each other for triggering flashpoints and violating the agreement. The first day of the ceasefire began with optimism but ended in clashes. The hope is that in coming days, the country sees peace take root, long enough to turn the page and keep the country from slipping back into another chapter of violence.
