Syrian officials have reported that 120 detainees linked to the Islamic State escaped from a prison in Ash Shaddadi after violent clashes led to the retreat of Kurdish fighters. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) accused the Syrian army of deliberately freeing prisoners associated with terrorist organizations and conducting summary executions, including of Women's Protection Units fighters.

The incident has heightened fears of renewed violence and instability in the region, with concerns about potential new massacres. While some camps housing ISIS-linked families remain under SDF control, the Syrian government has expressed readiness to manage remaining prisons in cooperation with US forces to prevent the resurgence of terrorism.

After violent clashes which forced Kurdish fighters to retreat, the Syrian army patrolled the city of Sidade, looking for inmates of the local prison. Amidst the chaos, some of the detainees reportedly managed to escape, although their numbers remain unclear. Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, accused the Syrian army of freeing the prisoners linked to the terrorist organisation and of having conducted summary executions. The execution of fighters from the Women's Protection Units after their capture, along with the release of ISIS militants, constitutes a reproduction of terrorism and poses a direct threat to regional and international security. Such actions raise serious concerns about the possibility of new massacres, similar to those committed against Alawites, Druze and Kurds in Aleppo. In only a few days, Ahmed al-Shara's forces have made spectacular advances in the north-west of the country. Initially, they had agreed to hand over the control of prisons holding several thousand Islamic State group fighters to the Syrian government. The camps of al-Raj and al-Hol, which contain tens of thousands of ISIS-linked families, are still under SDF control. The question is, for how long? The Americans and French want the experienced Kurdish anti-terrorist units responsible for these matters to stay in place. That is what was signed yesterday, but we will see if it will be applied on the ground. The Syrian Ministry of the Interior has said it is prepared to manage the prisons still under Kurdish control in Hasakeh, in collaboration with the US forces, among others, to prevent the return of terrorism.
