Billions of dollars have been poured into Sydney's wastewater network after mysterious debris balls washed onto shores last summer. In addition to keeping beaches clean, the upgrades are expected to have other benefits too.

Sydney Water has announced a $3 billion investment to upgrade its wastewater infrastructure, with a focus on preventing the formation and beaching of fatbergs—large, foul-smelling debris balls. The funding, already included in residents' water bills, will be used to upgrade the Malabar Wastewater Treatment System and expand facilities like Glenfield, which together serve two million people in Sydney's south-west and east.

The staged upgrades, planned over ten years, aim to improve water quality and expand the use of recycled water for industrial purposes, such as supplying data centres. While the current focus is on environmental and industrial reuse, Sydney Water has long-term ambitions to introduce recycled water into the city's drinking supply, pending government funding and public acceptance.

People don't like to think about it, they don't like to talk about it, but when it stuffs up people really know. Over ten years, staged upgrades will see facilities like this one in Glenfield expanded to process more wastewater, taking pressure off the Malabar plant. We're improving the quality of the product that we provide here and that means that we can then use this product for other purposes. Like data centres increasingly in demand in the age of AI. They're pretty thirsty, they require a lot of water. Ultimately diverting much of the water that would otherwise be pumped out to sea. Right now the focus is on environmental and industrial reuse, but Sydney Water says it has longer term ambitions to see recycled water flow into our drinking supply. There is absolutely thinking about what we need to do for water security. But it would hinge on government budgets, not to mention community appetite. I don't want to be drinking faces.
