A review of Sydney's toll roads has recommended the introduction of two-way tolls on major routes, including the Eastern Distributor and harbour crossings. The review comes as toll prices have reached $10 on some roads, with public toll revenue projected to rise significantly in coming years, especially with the opening of new tunnels.

The NSW government has not yet made a decision on implementing two-way tolls on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Tunnel. The current toll cap scheme is due to expire at the end of the year, and the government is considering permanent relief measures. Meanwhile, a separate scheme for ticketless parking fines has been scrapped following community backlash, requiring councils to issue fines on the spot with photographic evidence.

Today it tipped $10 as a major review recommends it and the harbour crossings have tolls both ways. We believe it's going to be a very difficult sell for the government to pitch this as a win for motorists. The State Budget projects $159 million in public toll revenue this year, increasing to $180 million in two years. That then jumps more than $100 million when the Western Harbour Tunnel and delayed M6 are due to open the following year. That has to mean they are planning two-way tolling on the Western Harbour Tunnel, on the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. While two-way tolls on the Western Tunnel are assumed, the Minister claims... I want to make it clear there's been no decision on two-way tolling on the Harbour Bridge or the Harbour Tunnel. The government is on the clock, needing reform or more relief when the toll cap scheme expires at year's end. I'm not going to let down the people of Western Sydney. We're going to keep a program in place, but I want to make sure that it's permanent. It's also worth asking, is the current weekly cap effective? Yesterday was the last day to claim a rebate for tolls paid in 2024. Despite a late rush, I'm told about $100 million was left unclaimed. One scheme that has been scrapped, ticketless parking fines. There has been huge uproar from the community since day one. Councils are now required to take photos and issue fines on the spot. We are requiring councils to do a bit more, but we think that that's fair enough. Lachlan Kennedy, 10 News.
