A man is set to face court accused of brutally assaulting a 71-year-old woman at a park in Strathfield. Emergency services found the grandmother with severe injuries before she was hospitalised in a critical condition.

A 52-year-old man, John Bozic, has been arrested and charged after allegedly assaulting a 71-year-old woman in Strathfield, NSW. The woman, who was walking with her 6-year-old grandson, was reportedly punched in the head and left in critical condition. Police say the attack was unprovoked and described it as abhorrent. The woman's son-in-law, who arrived at the scene to help, was also allegedly assaulted. The accused has been refused bail and the case is under police investigation, with concerns for the woman's health remaining grave.

Totally shocked because it's a very quiet street. We've been here for 18 years and we've never had a peek or anything out of anybody. The grandmother was walking with her 6-year-old grandson in Strathfield around lunchtime yesterday when she was approached by Bozic. The pair don't know each other but had some kind of interaction which ended terribly. Bozic is accused of punching the woman in the head on a street. The lady has then fallen to the ground and subsequently, a short time later, police and emergency services were called to that location. Finding the 71-year-old in a critical condition, her young grandson there for the entire ordeal. We believe that the 6-year-old has witnessed this whole incident, which is absolutely traumatic and it's disgusting. Before she was allegedly attacked, the woman called her son-in-law for help. He came to the scene and tried to intervene, but police say he too was assaulted. It's shocking, isn't it? Absolutely shocking that you can't walk the street with your young grandson. You're not safe. The 52-year-old has been charged with wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault. From my experience as a police officer, this is an absolute abhorrent attack. It is an unprovoked attack and it absolutely sickens us that this is happening in our community. Well Lachie, she remains here in a critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery. Her family tonight by her bedside. Police say that this alleged attack was similar to a coward punch. That woman suffering serious, significant injury. Senior police telling us they have grave concerns for that woman's health. As for what led up to all of this, well it's believed that 52-year-old man had a dog with him and potentially that dog bit a ball that woman's grandson was holding. As for what followed, that is now the centre of a major police investigation and a court case. The 52-year-old accused of bashing that grandmother refused bail in Burwood Court this afternoon.
