Christos and Nikolitsa Bakopoulos celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Skalabrini Village in Bexley, surrounded by loved ones. The couple, who met after the 1954 Sophides earthquake in Greece, endured early separation after Chris moved to Australia, with Niki joining him over a year later.

Now parents and grandparents, the Bakopoulos family reflected on the sacrifices made and the challenges faced in building a new life in Australia. The couple credited love, care, and respect as the secrets to their long-lasting marriage.

Seventy years of marriage, but their love hasn't aged a day. CROWD GASPS Christos and Nikolitsa Bakopoulos surrounded by loved ones today as they marked their platinum anniversary at Skalabrini Village in Bexley. Very, very special. It's a big, big honour. The pair met in the aftermath of a disaster, the Sophides earthquake that rattled Greece in 1954. But Niki and Chris found love amid the destruction. They were engaged within months. Chris moved to Australia just days after their wedding, and the pair were apart for more than a year. She joined me the 21st of February, 1957. And what was that reunion like? It was beautiful. The happiest day of our life. Now they're the proud parents of three daughters and grandparents to two grandsons. Very thankful, you know, to Mum and Dad for everything that they've done for us over the years. Many, many sacrifices. Today is a celebration not just of Chris and Niki's long and happy marriage, but also of how far they've come, moving halfway across the world and building a new life here in Australia. It was a very, very difficult times. And the secret to lasting marriage? Love, care and respect. Love and respect. Seven decades on and still very much on the same page. Hannah Taylor, 10 News.
