Sudan’s warring sides on Monday agreed to extend a shaky cease-fire in their battle for control of the country, after two key international mediators signalled impatience with persistent truce violations.

The ceasefire in Sudan between government forces and rival paramilitary rapid support forces has been extended for another five days. Earlier ceasefires have proven fragile in the past, having been flooded by both sides. Monday saw renewed fighting in the area of the capital Khartoum. Since the war began in mid-April, at least 886 civilians have been killed and thousands wounded, according to the Sudanese Doctors' Association. They say the death toll could possibly be much higher. The war has also displaced nearly 1.5 million people, both internally and to neighbouring countries.

Indonesian rescuers raced to evacuate thousands of people Thursday after a volcano erupted five times, forcing authorities to close a nearby airport and issue a warning that the crater collapsing into the sea could cause a tsunami.
