The government had relocated to Port Sudan in April 2023 when the city was taken by the Rapid Support Forces, but forces loyal to Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan reclaimed the capital by March 2025.

Edris, appointed prime minister two months after Khartoum's liberation, has pledged to restore essential public services. The United Nations reports that over one million people have returned to Khartoum, though fighting continues in the Kordofan region.

We are back today, Prime Minister Kamal Edris declared on Sunday, calling it the return of a government of hope to Sudan's national capital. The government was forced to flee Khartoum for Port Sudan in April of 2023, after the city fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. After nearly two years of intense fighting, forces loyal to Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan gradually retook the capital neighbourhood by neighbourhood, announcing its liberation in March of 2025. Appointed Prime Minister two months later, Kamal Edris now promises a restoration of public services, including the rebuilding of hospitals, schools, water systems, electricity and sanitation networks. According to the United Nations, more than one million people have returned to Khartoum in recent months, out of the 3.7 million who were displaced. The UN warns the conflict persists, with ongoing fighting between the army and RSF forces in Kordofan.

President Trump has been briefed on new military options for a strike against Iran amid widespread protests and a government crackdown on communications for Iranians, a senior U.S. official tells CBS News. "We'll be hitting them very hard where it hurts," he said at the White House.
