By using model systems, the researchers aim to determine which pathways are activated in osteoarthritis and develop specific treatments to address these issues.

When you think about astronauts when they go into space, the space microgravity environment does affect their joints. So I think that's why the biological effects. It's really important to understand that environment affects cartilage health and also bone health as well. When you look at your applications and your research, how could that impact what we know about patients here on Earth and their health? We're hoping that down the road, our research will lead to identification of a pathway that will enable us to develop specific drugs that will be useful for females. Because when you think about the severity of osteoarthritis in females, it's actually much more severe and they experience more pain. And with our model system, we should be able to determine the pathways that are being activated and hopefully we can develop specific drugs for that.
