Queensland has been rocked by one of its biggest earthquakes in decades. Towns escaped damage but thousands of people were left without power, and seismologists believe more tremors are on the way.

The tremor was felt widely across the state, from Rockhampton to the New South Wales border, resulting in over 12,000 reports from residents. The quake caused goods to fall from shelves and forced evacuations from local businesses, while power outages affected 13,000 properties due to the energy grid's safety system. Power was restored within two hours, and no major injuries were reported. Authorities noted this is the largest onshore earthquake Queensland has experienced in 50 years, and aftershocks are expected.

At the nearby Gameri Bakery, the sound of the quake turned heads as the tremor forced everyone out of the store. I actually thought that maybe something had blown up out the back or we didn't know. Actually, everyone was a little bit shocked. Everyone ran out of the shop pretty quickly and looked around and could see everybody was out in the street. Computers shook and the power was quickly cut out. At its peak, 13,000 properties lost power caused by the energy grid's safety system tripping. Power was restored within just two hours. One of those people waiting for the power to come back online was Glenda Geraghty. I heard this almighty bang and I thought it was a semi-trailer hit the building until everything started to rattle and fall over on the shelves. And then we realised that it was an earthquake. Mergen has experienced earthquakes before, but not like this. This was far worse, a lot worse. Near Brisbane, it was a blink and you'll miss it. We were getting out of the house and we didn't feel it at all. But some certainly still felt it. Desks rattled in Mullaney and walls shook in Caboolture. I thought I was actually imagining it until I started seeing reports like on things like, oh yeah, I felt it. This is the largest onshore quake Queensland has experienced in 50 years. The last time any other event got close to this was in 2015. We can certainly expect more aftershocks from this event. We will have to see how it all shakes out. Lawrence Jeffcoat, 10 News.
