A significant winter storm is expected to impact the United States from the Midwest to the Northeast, bringing widespread snow, ice, and persistent cold. This weather event is being driven by a change in the jet stream pattern, which will allow storms to draw moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, increasing the potential for severe winter conditions.

Forecasters indicate that the exact distribution of snow and ice remains uncertain, but areas farther south are more likely to experience ice, while northern regions will see more snow. The cold temperatures are expected to persist, potentially affecting heating costs and continuing into February.

We are going to see weather next week across the United States that we have not seen this entire winter. Now, the one thing we're going to see next week that we've seen a lot of is cold, and boy is the cold going to be persistent, especially in areas that have already been cold, from the lakes, the Dakotas, and into the Northeast. But here's the difference. The weather pattern, the jet stream, far different next week. Instead of a big dip in the jet stream across the eastern United States, you have what I call a flatter flow that goes from west to east across the country. What does that do? That's going to allow storms to form along the southern side of the jet stream, and since the jet stream is far enough south, that storm is going to be able to tap in the Gulf moisture. Previous storms haven't had a lot of moisture. We believe there is going to be a storm that has Gulf moisture late next week. And what does that mean? And here's something we've not seen a lot of. Widespread snow and ice that can span from the plains, even into the Rockies, all the way across the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast. Now, who gets the snow and who gets the ice? That's a little tricky right now, but the farther south you are in that pink area, the more likely this can be ice. The farther north, the more likely it's going to be snow. But we are looking at these widespread impacts, especially next weekend. The snow can cause major problems. The ice can cause major problems. And guess what? The cold is going to be persistent enough that it's going to have an impact on heating bills, and we think that cold continues right into February.
