One year after South Korea's army attempted to enforce martial law at the National Assembly, the country remains politically divided. The failed attempt led to the impeachment of former President Yoon Seok-yong and a snap election, after which President Lee Jae-myung stabilized the nation.

Despite the restoration of order, the effects of the crisis are still felt, with ongoing protests and calls for unresolved issues to be addressed. Supporters of the former president continue to rally, while Yoon and senior officials face trial for their roles in the attempted imposition of martial law.

South Korea remains polarised a year after failed martial law attempt

South Korea's army storming the National Assembly one year ago. The soldiers failed to stop politicians voting down a declaration of martial law by former President Yoon Seok-yong. It led to his impeachment and triggered a snap election. President Lee Jae-myung has stabilized the country in the wake of the crisis. While it was truly shocking that such a backward event as a self-coup occurred in the Republic of Korea, a cultural, economic and military powerhouse, our citizens' revolution, the revolution of light, was able to succeed. Those who opposed martial law marked the anniversary with a candlelight vigil. I'm here today to mark the anniversary and also to call for unresolved issues to be properly dealt with. One year on, South Korea has proved to be politically, socially and economically resilient, though the ramifications of that brief crisis continue to reverberate. What people ultimately want is for politics to solve their problems and look after their livelihoods. But because these issues aren't being resolved, we see one side constantly shouting for an end to insurrection, while on the other side, there are forces shouting Yoon again. The former President's supporters rallied outside the National Assembly. They have been gathering in Seoul every weekend, blaming a string of impeachments for the crisis. The Democratic Party kept impeaching and impeaching. They impeached 30 officials. Under those circumstances, declaring martial law is a natural course of action. I hope the impeachment becomes invalid and President Yoon returns to really set this country straight. There's little chance of that. Yoon Seok-yol and other senior officials from his administration are on trial, facing potentially lengthy prison terms over their alleged role in imposing martial law. Members of his former party issued a formal apology on Wednesday, with some pledging to sever all ties with their former leader, Jack Barton, Al Jazeera, Seoul.
