Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro's center-right Social Democrats have stated they will not support either candidate.

While the presidency is a largely ceremonial role in Portugal, the position does wield some powers. That includes, in some circumstances, the right to dissolve parliament, to call a snap parliamentary election and to veto legislation. Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro said his center-right Social Democrats would not support either of the runoff contenders.
