The 2025/2026 ski season is off to a sluggish start for some, as warmer temperatures and inconsistent early season snowfall forced many U.S. ski resorts to delay their planned opening days. From the Rockies to the Pacific Northwest, resorts that typically count on early November runs are now waiting on colder nights, stronger snowmaking windows and a shift in the forecast  before welcoming skiers.

Several prominent ski resorts in the western United States have delayed their opening days because of unseasonably warm and dry weather, resulting in insufficient snowfall. Resorts in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and other western states have all reported setbacks, impacting the start of the ski season.

Affected locations include Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee in Wyoming, Park City resorts in Utah, and Telluride, Powderhorn, and Beaver Creek in Colorado. The delays have also extended to Palisades Tahoe, Mount Batchelor, and Crystal Mountain, with officials noting that winter conditions may still improve as the season progresses.

Ski resorts delay openings due to warm weather

Okay, this is not how ski season was supposed to begin. Dry weather, stubborn warmth, and a serious lack of snowfall delayed opening day for some of the country's premier slopes. In Wyoming, both Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee missed their targets. In Utah, heavy hitters in and around Park City felt it too. Colorado's Telluride, Powderhorn, and Beaver Creek were all delayed. Almost every corner of Idaho struggled with the weather. In the West, delays piled up for Palisades Tahoe, Mount Batchelor, and Crystal Mountain. So the season is off to a sluggish beginning for some, but winter still has plenty of time to make a comeback.
