The search grew more desperate, more urgent with every passing minute. Crews scouring a remarkable wreckage site of twisted metal and debris. After hours on the water with no signs of life authorities confirmed the worst-case scenario. At this point, we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive. The terrifying incident caught on camera. See that massive cargo ship on the left side of your screen? That's the dally. It loses power. All of the lights go out. The crew knew something was terribly wrong, sending out a mayday call. Hold all traffic on the key bridge. There's a ship approaching. It just lost their steering. At this point, the out-of-control ship is moving at about 8 knots or 15 kilometres per hour. A plume of smoke can be seen in the moments just before it collided with the bridge's support structure. There's no sound on this recording to capture the chaos that followed. At least eight people were on the bridge, construction workers doing routine maintenance. Only two were rescued. The other six are now presumed dead. There would have been more drivers had the ship's crew not called for help, giving police time to close the bridge. There was a mayday who literally, by being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night. The federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge and get the port reopened as quickly as possible. Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other indication, no other reason to believe there's any intentional act here. While authorities try to ease the public's concerns. This is a unique circumstance. I do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact from a vessel of this size. The path ahead will be difficult. But Baltimore's mayor says his city can handle it. Mr. Mayor, given the scale and the scope of the devastation, what does this mean for Baltimore? Well, listen, Baltimore is a strong, resilient city. We can't be broken. We will be able to rebuild, but right now our focus is on the preservation of life and that's our only focus right now.
