A major rescue mission is underway across parts of Thailand and Malaysia after catastrophic monsoon floods submerged whole cities. It's the second successive year of seasonal floods in both countries.

Severe flooding has struck southern Thailand, particularly Hat Yai, following the largest single-day rainfall in over 300 years. Large parts of the city and surrounding provinces, as well as neighboring Malaysia, are underwater, with residents reporting total loss of property and vehicles.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with many roads and bridges destroyed, forcing emergency teams to use boats and helicopters to reach stranded individuals. Over two million people are estimated to be affected, and emergency workers face significant challenges in delivering aid and evacuating residents.

It's a similar story in multiple provinces across Thailand and neighbouring Malaysia, as rescue teams attempt to help residents by whatever means possible. Those that can be rescued on two or four wheels are the lucky ones, given how many roads and bridges have been destroyed in the flooding. For many, rescue by boat is the only option, with water levels reaching more than two metres in some places. Helicopters try to reach whoever's left, often simply to provide crucial food, water and medical supplies to those stranded atop buildings. In extreme cases, to transfer critical patients to nearby hospitals. Choosing who to help first is a massive task in itself. The current is quite strong in the area we went to. We found a dead body and we found locals who want to be evacuated. But we went to help sick people and give food and water to them. Many of those fortunate enough to have been rescued are taken to evacuation centres like this one in Hat Yai. Now the wait for updates on loved ones begins. With more than two million people estimated to be affected by the floods, emergency workers face an enormous battle in the days ahead.

Firefighting and rescue missions continued into Thursday for a second day after a massive fire broke out in Hong Kong, gripping a complex of seven high-rise residential buildings. At least 55 people were killed and dozens more were injured in what is the worst fire to hit the territory in decades.
