Those who haven't left their homes remain stuck inside for fear of getting caught in the violence. Haitians desperately wait for the transitional presidential constitution to be installed and are calling on the population to unite. The presidential council must be set up to calm the situation. If the people's demands are not met in two months' time, there will be no way out. Today it's up to Haitians to unite and resolve this crisis. We must take our destiny into our own hands if the country is to function. Despite an international arms embargo put in place to try and curb the violence, the trafficking of weapons and ammunition continues through what the latest UN report calls Haiti's poorest borders. With UN rights experts saying Haiti will need between 4,000 and 5,000 international police to tackle the gang violence which has targeted institutions across the country.
