Weeks of intense monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across India’s northern region of Punjab. Vast areas are submerged, homes and roads damaged, and rescue teams are working to evacuate residents.

Farmers are concerned about their future, with many reporting total loss of their crops and uncertainty about planting the next season's wheat due to lingering floodwater and sand. The army has been deployed to assist with evacuations and distribute relief packages, while local communities work to reinforce embankments to prevent further flooding.

As the flood waters recede in some areas of India's Punjab state, they reveal the extent of the agricultural destruction. Before the heavy monsoon rains hit, hundreds of thousands of farmers had been preparing to harvest their crops. Now they are worried about their future. The rice varieties we had sown, the basmati, everything is gone. Crops were just about to ripen and were ready to harvest when the floods struck. It is completely destroyed. When the flood water came again a couple of days back, it took away whatever was left. Punjab state authorities estimate that 162,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed. These are the fields that produce around 40% of India's basmati rice exports, which are worth more than $5 billion a year. The losses are much more than we expected. Now we're worried if we'll be able to sow wheat, the next crop. So much flood water and sand is in the farms. Almost 100% of the basmati crop is damaged. Communities near the banks of the Ravi River are scared the floods will return, so they're fortifying the embankment in case disaster strikes again. The army has been enlisted to relocate stranded people to makeshift shelters. And some survivors in the state's 23 districts have started receiving relief packages. Malek Habib Muzibe, Al Jazeera.
