The election campaign has begun amid heightened tensions, with reports of opposition arrests and allegations of police abductions. Some Ugandans have expressed doubts about the independence of the Electoral Commission and the fairness of the electoral process, though the Commission insists it is committed to a lawful and credible vote.

Presidential hopefuls formally submit their documents to the Electoral Commission. Seven candidates have been cleared to run. This marks the start of the race for Uganda's top seats. President Yoweri Museveni has ruled since 1986 and is running for a seventh term. He says he still has more to offer. His main challenger is pop star-turned-politician Bobby Wine, formerly known as Robert Chagulanyi. This is his second bid for the presidency. Wine claims he was forced out in the last election and says the odds are stacked against him, framing his campaign as a protest vote to fix a broken system. We are going to use this election to protest legally, we are going to use this election to protest constitutionally, and we are going to use this election to protest non-violently. We must mobilize the people of Uganda to come out and vote in very, very large numbers, numbers too big to rig. Tensions are already high. Several opposition figures have been arrested, including veteran politician Kiza Besijer, now facing treason charges. A series of abductions allegedly carried out by police has also shaken public confidence. Some Ugandans have questioned the independence of the Electoral Commission, they say the process may not be free or fair, so we asked the Electoral Commission chairman that question. Our sword of attack and defense, the law, whoever tries to cajole us or to arm-twist us to do something that is not in the law, we say but the law does not permit that, sir or madam. We cannot go that direction because the law does not permit it. The Electoral Commission insists it's working to ensure a safe and credible vote, but with distrust running deep, some critics claim the process is already tainted.
