Over 7 million registered voters cast their ballot with a voting turnout of 61%, though the Constitutional Council has yet to validate the results, they have already paved the way to a power handover between incumbent Macky Sol and Dioumae Faye by April 2nd. A political shift that could put an end to months of tensions across the country, international observers have praised the openness and organisation of the election. The procedures were generally followed professionally by polling station staff. Voters were able to make their choice freely in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere. The outcome follows a turbulent period of violence, an arrest of the opposition candidate Ousmane Sonko and a political crisis triggered by Macky Sol's postponement of the vote. Basirou Dioumae Faye, who replaced Ousmane Sonko as candidate, was himself detained for months before the election. The 44-year-old will be the first member of the opposition to have won the first round of voting since Senegal's independence from France in 1960. The West African bloc, ECOWAS, welcomed the election but raised concerns about the electoral rules. Basirou Dioumae Faye's election could trigger a profound change within Senegal's institutions as he promises to restore national sovereignty and launch a programme of what he calls left-wing pan-Africanism.
