Senegal has taken back control of land originally set aside for Akon City, a $6 billion urban development project proposed by singer Akon. The ambitious plan, which featured futuristic skyscrapers and infrastructure, was intended to be powered by renewable energy and supported by its own cryptocurrency. 

Despite initial excitement and comparisons to the fictional city of Wakanda, the site remains largely undeveloped after several years, with only an unfinished reception building present. Senegalese authorities have decided to pursue more realistic development options for the land, citing ongoing funding issues and legal obstacles faced by the project.

Touted as a high-tech utopia powered by renewable energy and bankrolled by its own cryptocurrency, Acorn City was ambitious as it was daring. Designed with curvy skyscrapers and sleek modern infrastructure, early renderings of Acorn City drew comparisons to Marvel's fictional African metropolis Wakanda. It was supposed to come at a cost of $6 billion, but nearly seven years on, much of the 800-acre piece of land allocated for the project remains an empty grassland, save for a single unfinished reception building. Now Senegal is repossessing the land to build something realistic, the BBC reported, citing the country's tourism authorities. Senegal's leaders had hoped that the project would help transform the country where Acorn, born Alion Badaratia, spent a part of his childhood. The singer has struggled to get funding for the project, while legal challenges have also taken their toll.
