Senate Republicans are attempting to pass a bill that would cut $9.4 billion from previously approved federal funds across multiple agencies. The effort is under significant pressure from President Trump, who has indicated his support is contingent on the bill's approval. Some Republican senators have voiced concerns about certain proposed cuts, particularly those affecting AIDS research and public broadcasting, which could complicate efforts to secure enough votes.

With only a narrow margin for dissent, GOP leaders are negotiating with members to address reservations without altering the bill, as changes could force another House vote. In parallel, a Senate confirmation hearing is being held for Mike Waltz, nominated as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., with Democrats expected to question him about past controversies during his tenure as national security advisor.

All right, at this moment, Senate Republicans are considering a bill that will formalize cutting back $9.4 billion pre-approved dollars to multiple federal agencies, and they have until Friday to pass this package. President Trump's pressuring GOP leaders to approve these doge cuts or risk losing his support. CBS News congressional reporter Torian Small is at the Russell Rotunda, I believe, on Capitol Hill. Great to see you again this morning, Torian. Is there any reason to believe that Republicans who back these cuts won't make their Friday deadline? Well, it depends, Errol. I think we're starting to hear more reservations among the conference, but not a significant amount that would suggest that they just don't have the numbers yet. What we're expecting to happen over the next couple of days is for Senate leadership to talk to those Republicans about what concessions they would like to see made in this legislative package or whether or not they could stomach the package as is, because the marching orders from House Speaker Mike Johnson to Leader Thune in the Senate is that he does not want to see any changes that would warrant them having to vote it again out of the House because of the very slim majority that he holds there. What we're hearing in terms of reservations are from the likes of Senator Susan Collins of Maine. There's concerns about any changes or cuts to this program that funded AIDS research and resources around the globe that was started under President George W. Bush. There's also some concerns from Republicans like Senator Mike Rounds that any cuts to NPR could be viewed negatively, of course, as about a billion dollars worth of cuts to public broadcasting. Ultimately, though, there are three votes that Republicans can afford to lose, and then that would see the vice president step in to be that tie-breaking vote. But any more could thwart their progress on this, and again, as you mentioned, Errol, they have until Friday to get this passed or else this bill is essentially dead. Yeah, and I'm thinking back to the big, beautiful bill. Senator Mike Hawley saying he disagrees with Medicaid cuts. He still supported the bill in the end and then said he'll do what he can to make sure those cuts don't happen. So sometimes Republicans say they have issues with the bill, vote for it anyway, and then complain about the same things after the fact. We'll have to see. I want to ask you about Mike Waltz because he has a Senate confirmation hearing today to be the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., and our viewers will remember he left his position as national security advisor earlier this year in disgrace, really, after that signal chat controversy. Democrats are likely to use this as an opportunity to grill him today. What should we expect to see? Yeah, this is the first time that he'll testify before Congress after that very significant controversy and ultimately his ouster because of it. So we're likely to see Democrats really pounce on him for that. But we talked to one Democrat who said that she's open to hear more about exactly what his goals are for this U.N. position. The person who was tapped before him, that's Congresswoman Elise Stefanik from New York, had a pretty contentious perception of the United Nations and that nomination. She had previously railed against what she called anti-Semitism within the ranks of that organization. So it's interesting to see how exactly he would respond to that and any other questions about the changing view of this position moving forward, especially because Donald Trump, the president, has had some disparaging remarks about the intergovernmental agency. So now it's going to be on him to explain why he feels he's qualified for this when it was clear that it didn't work out for his last position that he was previously confirmed by this same panel for.
