The escalation of fighting, particularly from the M23 rebel group, has led to widespread job losses, making it difficult for parents to afford school fees and supplies.

The violence has forced over 2,500 schools to close, with many converted into shelters for displaced people. The United Nations Children's Agency has called for emergency measures to prevent hundreds of thousands of children from missing out on education. Despite peace efforts, insecurity and poverty continue to threaten access to schooling for young people in the region.

The streets of Goma are busier than usual. Thousands of students are returning to school after the holidays. But Irwen Kamwami says all six of her children between the ages of two and ten will be staying home. She and her husband lost their jobs after fighting escalated in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in January when the Rwandan-backed rebel group M23 forced the army to retreat and seize large parts of the region. The school year is more difficult for us compared to the last one. We can't afford the school fees and we still have debt from last year. I have only managed to buy some uniforms for the children. School officials are demanding we pay the fees up front but I don't have the money. In the markets, goods are in stock but people can't afford to buy them. The M23's offensive has strangled the local economy and upended lives. We have difficulties selling. Besides, we lowered the price. But the majority of buyers were unable to afford school supplies for their children. There's no cash movement in the market because of the war and economic situation. The UN Children's Agency is calling for emergency measures to ensure hundreds of thousands of children don't miss out on an education. The fighting has forced more than 2,500 schools to close in the province of North Kivu and South Kivu. Many have been turned into temporary shelters to accommodate the more than 6.5 million people displaced by the violence. This year is totally different from last year because our city has endured fighting and most parents have lost their jobs or have left the area with their families. Also, in previous years, parents were able to prepare their children for school. But this year, many children have lost their parents. The M23 is among dozens of armed groups fighting for control for the mineral-rich region. Despite efforts to end the conflict, with two separate peace deals mediated by the US and Qatar, attacks continue. In times of crisis, schools play a crucial role in providing some stability for children. But here in eastern DRC, families say they can't afford the fees or are afraid for the children's safety leaving the education of hundreds of thousands of young people hanging in the ballast.
