Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on German citizens to defend democracy by voting in the upcoming European Union elections. This appeal follows a series of assaults on politicians in Germany, coinciding with the start of postal voting. Scholz addressed the nation through a video podcast, emphasizing the importance of standing against these attacks to protect democratic values. Politicians in Germany have been facing a range of attacks, from vandalism of election posters to physical assaults. Notably, Social Democratic Party candidate Matthias Ecke was hospitalized after being attacked, and a Berlin senator was hit over the head with a heavy bag. Scholz expressed deep concern over the increasing violence targeted at those engaged in political work. The police union has highlighted a worrying trend of nearly 3,000 incidents last year, indicating a possible rise this year. These attacks, ranging from minor to severe, often go underplayed until a significant event occurs. Such violence is attributed to the rise of far-right elements within the country. Mainstream political figures, including Scholz, argue that a strong democratic response is needed to counter the growing influence of far-right ideologies that threaten European unity. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, currently leading in polls over the SPD, denies accusations of inciting violence, noting that its candidates and members have faced attacks as well.
