China has faced pressure from Washington to halt the sale of technologies, such as microchips, which could be used by Russia to manufacture weapons. U.S. officials have warned that Chinese banks could be excluded from the U.S. financial system if they continue these sales. Former U.S. ambassador to NATO, Kurt Volker, noted that Chinese banks are cautious about any actions that might jeopardize their broader global economic interests.

The meeting in Beijing resulted in a joint statement from China and Russia, expressing their desire to prevent the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Although China remains officially neutral on the war, it introduced a 12-point peace plan last year which did not explicitly call for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. President Putin expressed gratitude towards China's proposals aimed at resolving the conflict.

Russia wants some help and China is a little bit reticent about providing that help. Kurt Volker is the former U.S. ambassador to NATO and says Chinese banks are nervous. They don't want to see any kind of alignment with Russia jeopardize its broader economic interest globally. After years of surging trade between Russia and China, March and April saw a dip compared to the same time last year. Analysts blame China's fears over possible sanctions. In Beijing, people are divided over the relationship. China is getting very close to Russia says this woman and I don't think it's a good thing. Putin said they also discussed Ukraine though China is officially neutral on the war.
