FIFA will take independent legal advice on a call by the Palestinian Football Association to suspend its Israeli counterpart over events in Gaza, the world body's president said Friday (May 17).

FIFA has announced it will seek independent legal advice regarding the Palestinian Football Association's proposal to suspend the Israeli Football Association. The motion was put forward at FIFA's 74th annual congress in Bangkok and was endorsed by members of the West Asia Football Federation, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

The Palestinian Football Association has accused Israel of violating FIFA's statutes, citing the killing of 100 footballers and the destruction of football infrastructure in Gaza during the conflict with Hamas. They also highlight issues of racism towards Palestinians in Israeli football clubs. 

The Israeli Football Association has rejected these claims, describing them as a cynical and politically motivated attempt to harm Israeli football. They insist they have not violated any FIFA or UEFA rules and will continue to adhere to regulations.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the need for unity in football and outlined that FIFA will convene an extraordinary council to discuss the findings of the independent legal advice before a specified date in the near future. 



FIFA to seek legal advice over Israel suspension

Should Israel be suspended from FIFA? That's the motion the Palestine Football Association has put forward at FIFA's 74th annual congress in Bangkok. Regarding the proposal under discussion, the FIFA requests a vote in today's congress without any further delay as well as to temporarily suspend the IFA as a member of FIFA with immediate effect. The Palestine Football Association has accused Israel of a series of FIFA statutory violations in Gaza and the West Bank, one of which is to respect all internationally recognised human rights and to strive to promote their protection. The group claims that in Gaza around 100 footballers have been killed and all football facilities and infrastructure have been destroyed during Israel's war on Hamas, and notes that racism towards Palestinians is prevalent in Israeli football clubs. The proposal, which was formally submitted in March for discussion by FIFA's 211 members, has been endorsed by members of the West Asia Football Federation, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Israel's football association has rebuked its claims. Once again, we are facing a cynical, political and hostile attempt by the Palestinian Association to harm the Israeli football. Make no mistake, the IFA never violated a rule set by FIFA or UEFA and will never do it so in the future. During the opening of the congress, FIFA's president Gianni Infantino pleaded for football unity in an aggressive and divided world. He has said that FIFA will seek independent legal advice and that an extraordinary council be convened before July 20.
