Selydove, home to approximately 20,000 residents, is the most significant locale to recently fall under Russian control amid a series of territorial gains credited to Moscow's military since the onset of October.

Despite the territorial advances claimed by Russia's defense ministry, the Institute for the Study of War indicates that these are primarily small-scale, localized incursions with substantial combat activity occurring mainly in the Donetsk and Luhansk areas. In response to the mounting pressure on its forces, Ukraine has initiated a campaign to mobilize 160,000 additional troops, aiming to increase their military strength by 85 percent.

Significant international tension is evident as Ukraine's leadership responds to reports of Russia potentially reinforcing its troops with over 10,000 soldiers from North Korea. Ukrainian officials contend that such moves by Russia warrant the deployment of long-range weaponry by Western allies to counter these threats. Meanwhile, diplomatic engagements between Moscow and Pyongyang have been ongoing, with North Korean Foreign Minister Cho Song-ri visiting Russia for discussions with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, stirring concerns over the implications of heightened cooperation between these nations on global security.

It adds to the 478 square kilometres of territory seized since the start of October, Russia's highest monthly total since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022. But according to the Institute for the Study of War, the true picture of Russia's recent successes in Ukraine can be characterised by small-scale, localised advances, with significant active fighting largely along the regions of Donetsk and Luansk. Almost daily, Russia claims a new victory, further pressuring Ukraine's depleted forces. Kiev announced a drive on Tuesday to mobilise 160,000 troops to boost its numbers by 85 per cent. But its concerns are further exacerbated by warnings that Russia is imminently deploying more than 10,000 troops from North Korea. The Ukrainian president says this justifies the use of long-range weapons from the West against Russia. Some of the countries, they say, oh, it's crossing red lines. And if we will give you permission, Russia will escalate. But I think the North Korean soldiers, this is escalation not from our side, from the side of Russia. In Moscow, Russian and North Korean officials were set to hold strategic talks. North Korean Foreign Minister Cho Song-ri is arriving in Moscow on an official visit to hold strategic consultations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Fuelling fears that Russia and North Korea's relationship is growing stronger and poses a global security threat.
