Russia has launched its largest drone assault on Ukraine since the conflict began, targeting key infrastructure and residential buildings in Kyiv. The attack involved more than a dozen missiles and approximately 800 drones, resulting in significant destruction, civilian casualties, and injuries. For the first time in the war, a Ukrainian government building was directly targeted, with the country's prime minister present during rescue operations. 

Ukrainian officials have appealed for increased international support to defend against further attacks, while some Western allies have expressed willingness to send military personnel if a peace agreement is reached. The assault follows recent warnings from Russia's president against Western troop involvement, and comes amid stalled peace negotiations and calls for stronger security guarantees for Ukraine.

Kiev was also pummeled. More than a dozen missiles and some 800 drones raining down destruction on the capital city. That familiar sound of air raid sirens sent residents scrambling for safety. For the first time in this war, a Ukrainian government building was targeted. A direct assault on the center of power. The country's prime minister was there as rescue workers cleared the debris. It looks like Russia is not ready for negotiations and is not seeking peace. Yulia Svibridenko says, we call on our partners to help protect the sky. Russia hit residential buildings too. Among the dead, a young mother and her three-month-old baby, according to city officials. 20 more people were injured. I heard the drone descending, which was then followed by an explosion, sparks and glass shards. Curtains fell on us. I was very scared, says this man who managed to escape. Russia has been ramping up its drone attacks on Ukraine alongside U.S. attempts to broker a ceasefire. This latest aerial attack comes just days after Russia's president warned he won't tolerate Western troops on the ground in Ukraine. Some allies, including Canada, France and the UK, are open to sending military personnel to keep the peace if it can ever be reached. If some troops appear there, Vladimir Putin said, these will be legitimate targets for destruction. Ukraine is undeterred. Its military says it launched a strike of its own on a Russian oil pipeline. We all understand that we need additional pressure on Putin. U.S. President Donald Trump seems prepared to answer that call. Are you ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia? That's something Trump has avoided doing to this point, preferring to see the peace process play out instead. But those negotiations have fallen flat. There's been no sign of progress in weeks. Mark Carney has also put out a statement about this assault. The prime minister called Putin's latest maneuver a cowardly attack on innocent civilians. And despite the Russian president's threats against Western forces, Carney said Ukraine's allies need to sign off on a robust and credible security guarantee to try and bring this conflict to a close.
