Umpires will still rule, but teams can challenge their calls using the machine. At Wimbledon this year, for the first time, computers judged whether balls were in or out. Whether these changes are ultimately good for the games is debatable, but I'm interested in the pattern they suggest. Sport is a canary in the coal mine, showing us how we're changing before we've had time to name the change. What does it mean when judgment is outsourced? Who makes the call? To whom do you appeal? What's the human cost when we seek efficiency? These questions matter not just to fans, but to all of us navigating artificial intelligence, accelerating shift everywhere all the time. What happens to the jobs that disappear, the skills that vanish, the instincts we no longer need? Are these the right questions? I don't know. But even incremental changes should carry a sidecar of questions. In the age of AI, one cost may be subtraction by omission, the quiet erasure of human presence, judgment, texture, accountability. If we don't name those losses, they disappear without argument or acknowledgement. We gave away our privacy, our locations, preferences, routines for convenience. On social media, we traded presence, communal ties, for approval. We look up from our book more than down at it because we've given our attention away and our focus. Will we give away our sense of judgment? Have we already? The umpire behind the plate, the judge on the line, these aren't just rule enforcers, they embody human judgment. When we replace them with machines, we should acknowledge what's being replaced, forged under pressure, shaped by craft, made with courage. Will those qualities show up elsewhere? Or do we risk losing them entirely? This is not a defense of what's happening. It's a search for better questions, questions that slow us down long enough to take account so that when we give something away, at least we know what it was worth.
