The country's Disaster Management Agency has responded to a record number of incidents, with twice as many emergencies as in previous years. Experts from ELT's Department of Meteorology attribute these changes to climate change, noting that Hungary and the Balkans are among the fastest warming regions in Europe. The rising temperatures are leading to longer droughts, more intense storms, and significant agricultural damage as moisture rapidly evaporates from the soil and returns as destructive rainfall.

Extreme weather events in Hungary are becoming more frequent and more destructive. On July 7th, the country was battered by storms with winds reaching 130 km per hour. The wind uprooted trees, tore off roofs and paralyzed both rail and air traffic. Hungary's Disaster Management Agency says it received more alerts than ever before and had to respond to twice as many incidents as during storms in 2023. As the effects of climate change intensify year by year, so does the damage. According to a member of ELT's Department of Meteorology, summers in Hungary will slowly become so extreme that they will gradually alternate between droughts and torrential rain. Temperatures are higher and longer. We can also see the increase in the frequency of storms. The longer the droughts, the stronger the intensity. All three variables are increasing and this is due to climate change. This is largely because the Balkans and Hungary are among the fastest warming regions in Europe. Moisture that should remain in the soil evaporates rapidly into the atmosphere, only to fall back down not as rain, but as destructive storms. The cycle is already causing severe damage to Hungarian agriculture.
