With over 800,000 refugees living in camps and settlements in northern Kenya, opportunities for resettlement to countries like the U.S., Canada, and Austria have become increasingly limited. Kenyan officials highlight the strain on resources and the challenges of supporting such a large refugee population, while refugees continue to seek support and community within the camps.

Helen Pio and her family were all ready to start a new life in Germany, but the new government has now imposed tough restrictions on migrants and asylum seekers. Pio is among 183 refugees in Kakuma who are affected. She used to live here and had sold all her property in preparation for the move. Now she has to start life again from scratch. I don't even know how to explain this to my children. I don't know what to do. Sometimes I just break down and cry. I don't know who can help me. Perina Nadai Janezo is also in despair. She says she just wanted a better life for her and her daughter and her other children. I've been left with nothing. I got this kettle from Nairobi when we were waiting to fly to Germany. The UNHCR gave us two pounds when we returned to the camp. Eight hundred thousand refugees live in camps and settlements in the north of Kenya. Many of them would like to be relocated to another country. This is where some of the young refugees come to unwind, but they say they're frustrated. They don't have jobs and they feel stuck here. And now their chances of being relocated to third countries seem impossible. The U.S. is not an option anymore. Countries like Canada and Austria offer few slots. Government officials say the camps are overcrowded and resources are stretched. We will not be able to manage a situation where we have 800,000 refugees roaming in the country, insecure, no food, no way of sustaining themselves. We have to strike a balance. So here, this community of refugees from different countries in the region share a little bit of home. They say they're dealing with similar struggles and this way they feel like a family.
