I identified my brother's body due to a previous skull fracture and a distinctive mark on his teeth. That's how I was certain it was him. Now we are heading to bury him. I didn't know they were here. I truly didn't. But I came to this square when I saw ambulances and rescue teams arriving. I noticed they had written down some of the names of the deceased. I couldn't bring myself to look at the bodies. They have been decomposed and their faces are unrecognizable. We lost some of our relatives many months ago and thought they had been arrested. But now we've found one of them among the bodies. Identifying the remains is nearly impossible. Two years of bombardment have left destroyed Gaza forensic collapse. And with no equipment, no DNA testing and no refrigeration, even a trained medical staff are left working by instinct. It basically depends on visual methods like recognizing faces or tattoos or past surgical surgeries. Each recovery is both a relief and a torment. Families long for a closure, but for many, it will never come. Every shroud represents a life, a story untold. And in this fragile calm, the work continues not to rebuild, but to remember.
