Following the federal election, the NSW seat of Bradfield is still without a winner. Three weeks on, the electoral commission has ordered a full recount. The electorate has been Liberal-held since its inception in the 1970s.

The contest for the federal seat of Bradfield has concluded with Liberal candidate Giselle Kapturian leading Independent Nicolette Buller by only eight votes. In line with established procedures for close results, a recount will be held, including a review of first preference and informal votes, as well as the distribution of preferences.

The result follows a closely watched count, with both candidates leading at different stages as postal votes and preferences were tallied. The recount is expected to take up to two weeks. A similar recount may also occur in the Melbourne seat of Goldstein, where Liberal Tim Wilson has narrowly won against Independent Zoe Daniel.

Recount ordered after seat declared 'too close to call'

If you've ever doubted the phrase, every vote counts, then you might want to listen to this. The two-horse race for Bradfield between Liberal Giselle Kapturian and Independent Nicolette Buller has come down to just eight votes. At the final count last night, the Liberal candidate received just over half of all ballots and even though there is technically a winner, the long-standing practice in any seat where the final margin is 100 votes or less, there has to be a recount. This will begin on Monday at Accounting Centre in the electorate and it will see the first preference votes recounted, a re-examination of all informal votes and the complete recount of the two candidate preferences. You can imagine this has been an excruciating three weeks for the candidates as both have been ahead at different times as things like postal votes and preferences were taken into account. Last week, Bradfield was called by some analysts for the Liberal candidate so she partook in a vote here in Canberra to decide the party's new leader, Susan Lee, then seven days later on Monday of this week, just gone, the Independent jumped ahead after the final postal votes were counted so she was declared the provisional winner but then again just yesterday as the final preferences rolled in, the votes were square for several hours until that final eight vote margin was settled. It could be up to two weeks until the recount is complete but this isn't the only one on the cards. The Liberal candidate for BC is also considering a request by Independent Zoe Daniel in the Melbourne seat of Goldstein which Liberal Tim Wilson has just won back. So no doubt, no doubt, a nail-biting time for all involved.
