People gathered in several towns in the breakaway region of Somaliland on Sunday to celebrate its recognition by Israel -- a decision condemned by the Somali president as a "threat" to stability in the Horn of Africa.

Israel's recognition of Somaliland as an independent state prompted large celebrations in Hargeisa, the region's de facto capital, while also igniting protests and anger in Mogadishu. Somalia's president condemned the move in parliament, labeling it an act of illegal aggression and warning of its potential impact on regional and global peace. 

The decision has drawn international attention, with the European Union and several countries voicing opposition and calling for respect for Somalia's unity. Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 and maintains its own institutions, had not previously been recognized by any UN member state before Israel's announcement.

Somalia's president was quick to condemn the move in parliament, saying that Benjamin Netanyahu's recognition of the territory was an act of illegal aggression. We tell the world the infringement committed by Netanyahu and his attempt to divide the Federal Republic of Somalia endangers the peace and tranquility of the world and the region. A number of countries across the globe have since voiced their opposition as well. The European Union called for respect of Somalia's unity. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. The self-proclaimed republic is strategically placed on the Gulf of Aden. It has its own money, passports and army. Until Israel's announcement, it had failed to be recognised by any UN member states.

The United Arab Emirates says it's withdrawing its remaining forces from Yemen. The move comes after Saudi Arabia bombed a port in Yemen, saying it targeted an arms shipment intended for a UAE-backed separatist force.
