Authorities have deployed bait boxes and carbon dioxide extermination methods, with several rats found dead as a result. Animal advocates have expressed concerns about the inhumanity of the extermination and its impact on the local food chain, pointing to food waste as a root cause. Local restaurants have increased security around garbage containers to prevent attracting more rodents. The community is calling for a swift resolution to the issue.

Well this you know rats in New York City nothing new but now it looks like they're starting to make their way onto Long Island. Fox 5's Jody Goldberg has more from the town of Huntington. Huntington has a rat problem. Rats caught on camera racing through the town of Huntington are raising concerns after hundreds made a vacant building their home. Anywhere between 20 to 30 rats scurrying back and forth. I probably saw 30 or 40 of them under that one bush right there. This former insurance building is just steps away from many restaurants on Main Street. The town is working with the Suffolk County Department of Health and several businesses have already been cited for violations linked to the infestation. I don't know who owns that building but it's been a mess there's always garbage there. Bait boxes are now set up to target rats above ground while an exterminator is using carbon dioxide to eliminate those underground. By mid-Monday several were seen dead. I mean I don't like rats they shouldn't be here. Definitely concerning. They have to clear it up some one way or another. Animal advocates say killing the rats is inhumane and could disrupt the local food chain. They say it stems from a much bigger issue dealing with food waste. You can see them scurrying you can sometimes hear them but it's kind of gross we just keep moving to the nicer restaurants. I'd rather them be dead and cleaned up. Portofino restaurant isn't taking any chances. Their garbage containers now under lock and key to prevent attracting any animals. It's not fair to the community and the customers leaving the establishment and I hope for something that's done soon. A rat race for a town that says they're not welcome here.
