Hundreds of residents in Uvira, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, gathered to protest the appointment of General Olivier Gassita Mukunda as deputy commander of the local armed forces. Protesters cited Gassita's alleged poor track record in Bukavu and accused him of collaborating with M23 rebels during a previous conflict. 

The demonstration included the submission of a memorandum to local authorities and President Felix Tshisekedi, demanding Gassita's removal. The protest was largely peaceful until warning shots were fired during dispersal, causing panic. Civil society groups reported at least four deaths and several injuries, though these figures have not been confirmed by local authorities. The armed forces have called for calm and reaffirmed their support for General Gassita.

Hundreds of protesters on Monday responded to a call from civil society to take to the streets of Avira, in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Citizens protested the recent appointment of General Olivier Gassita Mukunda as deputy commander of the Diocese Armed Forces in the area. We were sent an officer we do not agree with, General Olivier Gassita, he has a very bad track record in Bukavu. If Bukavu fell, it's because of Gassita and Yav who is currently in prison. Protesters demanded Gassita's removal. They accused him of having collaborated with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels during the seizure of Bukavu last February. Now we ask ourselves, someone who failed miserably in the city of Bukavu, why are they still being given the chance to lead when the armed forces are in a coalition with the Wazalendo and the population? He does not have the trust of the people, which is why together with the population we have stood up to demand his removal. Demonstrators waved banners, signs and national flags and chanted slogans against General Gassita. They also submitted a memorandum to the local authorities, addressed to President Felix Tshisekedi. Wanting to sacrifice Uvira Fizi Menga, they decided to place him here to hand over the city to the rebels. Upon his arrival in Uvira, the population organised a series of citywide shutdowns to demand his removal. Police and the army oversaw the march, which proceeded peacefully until warning shots were fired during the demonstration's dispersal and caused panic. Civil society reports at least four deaths and several injuries, a toll not yet confirmed by local authorities. Tshisekedi's armed forces had already called for calm last weekend and had reaffirmed their support for the contested officer.

The Trump administration launched a new immigration enforcement operation in Chicago, saying the latest federal crackdown in a US city would target the "worst of the worst criminals." But activists in the city remain defiant and say they will resist efforts by ICE to snatch people off the streets.
