Authorities in Auburn, Alabama, have arrested Harold Rashad Dabney III in connection with the killing of retired Auburn University professor Dr. Julie Garshunili. Police allege that Dabney ambushed Dr. Garshunili while she was walking her dog in a local park, stabbed her multiple times, and then stole her vehicle to flee the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby, leading to Dabney's apprehension. 

Prosecutors have announced they are seeking the death penalty in this case, which has shocked the Auburn community. Dr. Garshunili, a professor emerita specializing in veterinary sciences, is remembered for her compassion and contributions to the university. Auburn University and former students have expressed their condolences and highlighted her legacy.

Alabama police arrested Harold Rashad Dabney III over the weekend. Police say that they got a call on Saturday of a deceased person in a wooden section of park near the college campus. Authorities believe Dr. Julie Garshunili was attacked possibly with a knife. Let's go live to CBS News correspondent Katie Weiss in Auburn. Katie, what happened in the suspect's arraignment? Well, just breaking just within the last couple of hours, Liz, we are learning that prosecutors are actually now seeking the death penalty in this case. The suspect accused in this homicide is 28 year old Harold Rashad Dabney of Montgomery, Alabama. He's not been granted bond for those two capital murder charges that he's facing and this is really an incident that has so many people in that Auburn, Alabama community just totally shocked at what happened. Police say that Dabney ambushed the retired Auburn University professor, 59-year-old Julie Garshunili and while she was walking her dog at a dog park. Police say Dabney dragged her into nearby woods at the park and stabbed her several times with a bladed object. Investigators say he then stole her red pickup truck, an F-150, to flee the scene and the truck was found later abandoned just a few miles away from there and that's actually how he was apprehended. Police got a call about a suspicious person in that area nearby where he dumped the truck, allegedly. Now, it's unclear at this time if those two people knew each other, if Dabney knew Shnueli. Now, take a look at where this happened. We have a map for you. This happened in broad daylight on a Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. at Kiesel Park in Auburn, Alabama, just about six miles away from where the university is actually located. Now, according to our CBS affiliate in the community, WRBL, the park is actually a popular green space where a lot of people like to go. It's normally very peaceful and quiet, a nice place to let your dog stretch your legs. We are told that fortunately her dog was not injured, but so many people mourning what they're calling just a tremendous loss and senseless. Liz? Truly, and Katie, what's the university saying about all this? Sure, so she was actually a professor emerita at Auburn and so while she had been retired since 2021, she was still very much an active member of the community, of the university community, and she was actually specializing in veterinary sciences. She was known for her research in to managing and preventing diseases in cattle. That's according to her biography online. Now, Auburn did release a statement to us today that reads in part, quote, Dr. Garge Shnueli's legacy of compassion, scholarship, and service will continue to inspire generations of veterinarians, and I think that does continue to stand true. I actually saw online many people posting about the legacy that she'll leave behind. I did also ask Auburn University for an interview today, but their their spokesman tells us understandably just not quite ready to do that just yet. Very much still shooken up over all of this and just how absurd and random this all appears to be. Now, today flowers line the fence at the entrance of that dog park where this crime took place. And I'll just leave you with one quote Liz from one of her former students who says that she was quote an amazing person and role model who quote exemplifies who we should all strive to be humble, kind, gracious, caring and senseless, selfless, selfless Liz.
