A proposed redistricting plan in Missouri would split Kansas City into three congressional districts, instead of the current two. Democratic officials, including U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver and Senator Amy Klobuchar, have criticized the plan, calling it unconstitutional and an example of gerrymandering that could dilute the city's political influence. 

Republican supporters, including Governor Mike Kehoe and Congressman Mark Alford, argue that the new map would ensure Missouri's conservative values are better represented in Congress. Local residents have also voiced concerns, stating that the plan could undermine their voting power by grouping them with communities far from Kansas City.

Thursday for the first time, we heard the voice of a Republican representative sponsoring this redistricting plan. Well, today, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar joined Representative Emanuel Cleaver and members of the Missouri Democratic Party to speak out against what they believe to be illegal gerrymandering led by the governor. KSHB 41's Fernanda Silva brings us their voices. Marsha Lerenberg nods in agreement. It's so frustrating what's going on. On Saturday, she participated in an event against redistricting in Missouri. Our voices would be lumped in with people who are hundreds of miles away. The redistricting proposal would split Kansas City into three districts instead of the two it's currently divided between. We believe that our voters and our members should be able to pick their politicians rather than having our politicians pick their voters. The largest change affects the fifth district. It's a purely political move. It is currently represented by U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat. It is unconstitutional, it is illegal, and it's unnecessary. On Saturday, Cleaver was joined by Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar to talk about redistricting. She says it is a national issue. By dividing this up three different ways and hacking up this great city that is thriving and that congressmen have done so much for, you diminish the power of this city. We tried reaching out to Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Republican Party. We didn't hear back on Saturday, but this is what he said on social media on August 29th. Missouri's conservative, common sense values rooted in faith, family, and freedom should be truly represented at all levels of government. According to him, redistricting would accomplish that. We also reached out to Congressman Mark Alford. His team pointed us to his statement from August 30th. On that, Alford wrote that regardless of where the district lines may fall, he will, quote, continue to advance the American First agenda while providing top-notch service to all constituents. He added that he trusts state lawmakers to ensure the conservative values of the majority of Missourians are represented in Congress and that he, quote, stands behind Governor Kehoe.
