During her visit, Princess Anne also walked the outskirts of the Botanic Gardens and made surprise encounters with local students and royal enthusiasts. In the afternoon, she visited Simpson Barracks and the Defence Force School of Signals before her scheduled departure from Australia.

A memorial small and sombre but extraordinary, Princess Anne proving how far-reaching the impact of the Porpunka police murders was, taking time to honour fallen detective leading senior constable Neil Thompson and senior constable Vadim Deva Hotar. I felt like she was happy to be here, very engaging, took her time talking to everybody. I was just really touched by it all. The memorial was her first royal duty of the day. Earlier, the 75-year-old princess took part in a Melbourne morning ritual, walking the outskirts of the Botanic Gardens. We had heard that she was coming to Melbourne and we missed her in Sydney, we had just left three or four days earlier and we said we'll try and see her while we're here and it worked out great. The princess and her procession a spectacle for royalists, and the surprise of a year nine school group which stumbled upon Her Majesty while on a city excursion. I didn't know she was here, we just passed and stopped by to have a look and it was so cool. We're on City Experience right now and right now we would be in English, so yeah. Very English morning for you. Very English morning, yeah. While Princess Anne has visited Australia on many occasions, it's been quite some time since her last trip to Melbourne. She was most recently here on a royal visit in 2009 after the Black Saturday bushfires. Known as the hardest working royal, the princess lived up to her reputation today. She spent the afternoon visiting the Simpson Barracks and the Defence Force School of Signals. She'll leave Australia tomorrow. Steph Warmgartel, 10 News.
