Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have lambasted a pro-Palestine gathering held in Melbourne on the anniversary of the October 7 conflict. Organisers insist it was a vigil, not a protest.

A large group gathered in Melbourne's CBD for a pro-Palestine vigil, which organisers described as a silent commemoration rather than a protest. The event coincided with the anniversary of the October 7 conflict escalation, and participants marched peacefully, carrying symbols and candles to Parliament steps under police supervision. 

The vigil was criticised by the Victorian Premier and Prime Minister, who described it as disrespectful and undermining the Palestinian cause. Separately, pro-Hamas graffiti appeared in Fitzroy, causing distress in the Jewish community. Authorities have removed the graffiti and state and federal police are investigating.

And as those memorials are held here at home, pro-Palestine demonstrations have been held in multiple cities. In Melbourne, organisers have defended marching through the CBD on the anniversary of October 7th. Rory Campbell has been in the city, and Rory, they say this wasn't a protest. Ursula, the Victorian Premier condemned this event as disrespectful. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said any protest today undermines the Palestinian cause here in Australia. Hundreds still turned out for what they say was a vigil, not a protest, marking the escalation of a conflict. A UN inquiry has found it was a genocide. Paying respect to the victims, they marched through the Melbourne CBD, mostly in silence to the beat of a lone drummer. They carried symbols of their cause. There were candles waiting on the steps of Parliament when this group arrived at their destination. There was a visible police presence overseeing the march, but it was mostly a peaceful affair, there was also a peaceful event held in Sydney today, a couple of hundred people gathering at a park in Bankstown. They were waving flags and had banners on display, Ursula, as speeches were made as part of a Stand for Palestine rally. And Rory, there is also growing condemnation in Melbourne tonight over some vile graffiti. Residents in Fitzroy woke to pro-Hamas slogans in some quite prominent locations. A billboard at an intersection had Glory to Hamas written on it. Of course, Hamas being the terrorist organisation responsible for the attacks on October 7 two years ago. A short distance away, more graffiti called for a repeat of that horrific day, saying do it again. Now this has all caused significant angst amongst the Jewish community here in Melbourne. The Prime Minister has called it terrorist propaganda. We will always stand against anti-Semitism, as should everyone. On any given day, this hateful behaviour is wrong. It's disgraceful, but particularly today. And I say to the Jewish community, we stand with you. The graffiti in Fitzroy has been removed, Ursula. State and federal police are investigating who was behind it.
