Bright colors, clean compositions and playful reference to pop culture. They're all characteristic features of Mous Lamrabat's photography. Born in Morocco and raised in Belgium, Lamrabat has made it his mission to explore how cultural symbols shape desire, particularly for marginalized communities. I used to be obsessed with logos when I was like 15, 16. It's also like a complex, you know, like we didn't have fancy shoes. We didn't have like the best basketball, Nike or Jordan shoes and this. So we were so obsessed with it because it was like on a pedestal. We always make sure that we got the logo out for you never know. You know, we can put it on something. It was just a coping mechanism of not having everything you want. I'm so thankful for it because I think there is where my creativity sparked, you know. Lamrabat's latest exhibition, Moustalgia, opened in London last month and is now on display in Marseille. Shot primarily in Senegal, the show celebrates cultural hybridity and pays homage to 1990s pop culture blended with aesthetics from African and Arab pop. If there could be a spotlight on Africa, it's like, it's really sad what I'm going to say. But like a lot of European countries or Western countries, there's always still an issue with black and brown. And we will always be like a little bit of, you know, less. People won't say it, but it is reality. And I think the art part is like, this is our way in, you know, this is where we can almost flex on them. Like, you know, look what we have, you know, look what we're doing. Through his work, Lamrabat demonstrates that photography can be both beautiful and politically meaningful and that changing the images we see is a step towards changing how we see the world. Moustalgia is on display at the Faces Gallery in Marseille until the 18th of January.
