The Pentagon is reportedly considering placing Alibaba on a list of companies alleged to have ties to the Chinese military, according to a Bloomberg report. This action could restrict Alibaba and other major Chinese firms, such as Baidu and BYD, from selling or operating in the United States.

The development marks a shift from previous U.S. actions that focused on private companies like Huawei, as Alibaba and Baidu are publicly traded and have American board members. It remains uncertain whether these companies will ultimately be added to the list.

What do we know about that story? So this really follows the pattern that I have just been talking about. Chinese, the industry, Beijing, it's concerned about being restricted to U.S. tech and it knows that it has to rely and build up its own A.I. champions like in Alibaba. So the U.S. is increasingly viewing China's entire tech stack as strategically aligned with the Communist Party and that's raising concern in Washington, potentially putting the likes of Alibaba and Baidu and BYD on a list that would restrict them from selling or even operating here in the United States. Now, this is interesting because we're not just talking about Huawei anymore. Huawei is a private company, concerns have long swirled about its connections to the Communist Party. We're talking about Alibaba and Baidu. These are publicly listed companies that have quarterly earnings and in the case of Alibaba has American board members. So it's a really interesting development for sure and we'll see if they actually make that one.
